Safety in the wilds

Biking safely is especially important when you’re riding in more remote parts of Scotland and further preparation is essential and additional adequate precautions should be taken:

  • Get a weather forecast for the area of your route
  • Allow plenty of time for your route and leave details of your party, route and return time
  • Highland weather can change fast. Be properly equipped! For clothing use several thinner layers rather than one thick one and take waterproofs, fleece, hat (to wear under your helmet) and gloves
  • In wilder parts take a map and compass and know how to use them. Also take additional food and refreshments, torch, whistle, survival bag and first aid kit
  • Don’t underestimate Scotland – rough terrain can be slow going and there is often no shelter
  • In emergency, the distress signal is six whistle blasts (or torch flashes), at one minute intervals
  • Do not rely on mobile phones
