Highland Wildcat

Highland WildcatThe Highland Wildcat trails are located adjacent to the East Sutherland village of Golpsie.
The location is suited to a wide range of interests as the less experienced can gently pedal through the broadleaved woodlands on the low ground while the more enthusiastic mountain bikers can go higher to the more challenging red and black graded routes. The monument on Ben Bhraggie is both the local landmark and highest point of the Highland Wildcat trails giving magnificent views over the Dornoch Firth and North Sea.

The trails are also designed to be durable in all conditions and therefore include a large proportion of rock in the more extreme sections. This rock comprises large sandstone slabs found on the hill laid out as a pavement or built into a more difficult riding feature. The trail surfaces are derived from this material and provide generally smooth and fast running conditions suitable for mixed abilities.

The trail layout is “stacked” such that the more difficult routes can only be reached by cycling up through the easier sections from the village at sea level. Skills development can therefore be achieved en-route and most features have an optional escape route or easier line to follow. The majority is singletrack through mixed woodland and pinewood but emerging onto the open hill to reach the start Highland Wildcatof the black route at 400m. From this point there is then over 7000m of descent; the longest singletrack descent in the UK, to get back to the village. This provides 1.5 – 2 hours riding (14km) but the easier “blue” route (7km) can be achieved within an hour.
